When two competitive kite models are available in the market, a rider needs to be sure of all the features that the kite support and then take the decision accordingly. Along with comparing features, one needs to choose the kite depending on the individual’s skill level in the sports.

One of the commonly compared kiteboarding kites is the Slingshot Sports 2018 Rally Kite and the Slingshot Sports 2018 RPM. While they are from the same company, you can certainly expect that both kites are different. But do you know that difference? Here are some of the key features that are different for both kites.

Size of the kite

Slingshot Rally vs RPMIf we compare the size of the kites, the RPM does have a wingspan of 10m while the wingspan of the rally can go up to14m. While some riders might not think much of the effects, the larger wingspan of the RPM can certainly be of help when it comes to riding those huge wing drafts. Hence, choosing the kite according to the board size and individual body weight is always advisable.

Read reviews of RPM 2018 here/su_button]

Wind range

Tremendous wind range by Rally makes it take extra points as compared to RPM. Comparing the wind window, the RPM positions itself forward in it whereas the Rally fits much deeper.

Stability

As compared to RPM, the Rally has a better depowering ability, hence making it easier to roll off while a crash happens. RPM has fast turning and loops, hence one will need greater ability and skills to manage the kite. With excellent speed characteristics, RPM is considered to be a faster kite than Rally, hence popular among freeriders. Basically, for unhooked tricks, RPM will make a good choice, but if you are an old-school rider, then you can give a shout for the Rally.

Jump Initiation

Jumps are great with the Rally and the initiation of the jump can be delayed as compared with the RPM. With an RPM, you got to keep in mind to angle the kite and initiate the jump sooner. While Rally can give you an excellent uplift, RPM can make you thrilled with the speed when it comes to looping.

Hangtime

Some riders often choose their kite based on the hangtime they can be offered. The Rally, being better than RPM in case of jumping up and hangtime, scored popularity. Moreover, relaunch is easier for Rally kites, which makes it easier to handle as well.

Beginners’ choice

As we discussed above, the Rally is a much stable and safer kite if the wind range, size and relaunching capacity are considered. Beginners, new to the sport will lack the skills of handling precise turnings and loops, hence can choose Rally over RPM. Once thorough with the skills and experienced enough to do unhooked tricks with speed, RPM can be your friend.

Conclusion

Choosing a kite is indeed an important decision to make, as the entire ride is dependent on it. Make sure to do your research, understand your ride capabilities and make the call. The Rally and RPM, both best in their own ways can give individual experiences in a ride. With various options in the market, one will never fall short in terms of variety. Training schools are also a good starting point for those who want a head start in the sport.

In kiteboarding, every single part of the gear has equal importance and contributes to safety and flexibility in the sport. In this post, we will talk about kite lines, which are overlooked by many riders and thereby causing some unexpected crashes. It’s great that you have considered to analyze various factors and choose the best kite line that suits your needs.

What Is A Kiteline

A kite line is the connecting link between the kite and the control bar, hence plays a huge role in the steering and movement of the kite. While longer kite lines provide good control over the kite due to its slow response, the shorter ones bring great power and speed in the sport, which is what freestylers will want the most.

What To Consider When Choosing Best Kiteline For Kiteboarding

Depending on the style of kiteboarding you prefer, these are the factors you may want to consider while choosing your kite line

  1. Material
Make sure to choose the material of the kite carefully. Some might be slippery which is not advisable for beginners. Also, they are likely to get worn out due to stretching, so choose wisely.
  2. Line length
As we discussed earlier, shorter lines bring thrill and the adrenaline rush to the kiteboarder. The quick turn effect allows professionals to put up a good show. Longer ones are easy to handle, hence advisable for newbies.
  3. Line weight
The weight of the line is as important as the weight of the kiteboard. It should be proportional to the body weight.

With that, let us look at some of the top selection when it comes to kitelines for kiteboarding.

1. Prism Tantrum 220 Dual-line Parafoil Kite with Control Bar

Kiteboarding has been gaining worldwide traction in recent years. And if you are still oblivious, kiteboarding is not an official sport in the Olympics. That is until this year. After a series of success stories and some amazing records, kiteboarding has been finally been successful in qualifying for a slot in the Olympics 2024! Five events were already confirmed earlier and in addition to that, M22-18 submission from the Romanian Sailing Federation was approved in the World sailing council meeting, held in London.

International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) has positive plans for setting up an excellent format and platform to showcase hydrofoil kite racing in the Olympics. This put forwards a great opportunity for the skilled and rigorous kite riders to nourish and play their best. Most likely, the model sponsored by Formula Kite comprising one hydrofoil and four foil kites will be used, officially yet to be confirmed.

kiteboarding 2024 in olympicsCurrent segments of racing include separate sections for men and female. IKA discussed in the meeting to establish a new format including a mixed division for both genders, in 2019. Official confirmation for the event format and the equipment is likely to be decided by November.

The probable procedure of men and women collecting points would be from races or relay styles where they get to perform alternate laps. IKA has reported that they are aiming to have an equipment that is durable enough to resist and cover ranges of wind- minimum of six to forty knots.

Let’s check the top ten sailing events (according to the source M22-18 submission)

  1. Men’s Windsurfer – RS:X
  2. Women’s Windsurfer – RS:X
  3. Heavyweight Men’s One Person Dinghy – Finn
  4. Men’s Two Person Dinghy – 470
  5. Women’s Two Person Dinghy – 470
  6. Mixed Two Person Multihull – Nacra 17
  7. Men’s Skiff – 49er
  8. Women’s Skiff – 49erFX
  9. Men’s One Person Dinghy – Laser
  10. Women’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial

The venue for the Olympics 2024 has been set to Paris, the charming capital of France and the scheduled races of kiteboarding will be held at Marina de Marseille

With increased popularity and enhanced talent, kiteboarding has found its place in 2018 Youth Olympics as well. Held every four years, this event is segmented into two editions, each every two years. The event is sponsored by the International Olympic Committee (COI)

With great vigour, young talent aged between 15 and 18, compete to qualify for their positions in the final event. Sources say, out of all, 12 from each gender will take part in the 2018 Youth Olympics.

The venue finalized for the event is Buenos Aires, Argentina.

To summarize- the format of the event will have a full fleet or half fleet races, consisting of multiple eliminations. Recommended heat size is 6 riders and wind range of 8-10 knots.

The post Essential Gear For Kiteboarding: The Kiteboarding Helmet appeared first on DVNT Kiteboarding.

]]>
The first thing which comes to mind when we think of a helmet, in general, is safety. From riding a bike to sailing a kite, the helmet is an equipment which we should wear without a blink. Let’s talk about a kiteboarding helmet and why that’s a must.

Why You Should Always Wear A Helmet When Kiteboarding

Protect your head- well, technically, protect your brain! We should not take the waters or the shores casually, as the injuries caused can be catastrophic. A kiteboarding helmet is the closest which keeps our head unharmed in those cases. Maybe the video below can explain more about the importance of wearing a helmet when kiteboarding.

Scenarios like falling from a great height on the waves or shores, getting dragged towards an object or just getting out of control due to sketchy winds can cause the head a lot of damage. And mind you these are real dangers that all kiteboarders should be wary of. If you need further justification that the accidents are real, you can visit this kiteboarding forum.

Now wearing a helmet isn’t enough, choosing the right one will be the priority. A helmet which is comfortable and fits correctly to your head will not be enough. You will need to find a good kiteboarding helmet that can also keep your head protected and intact during a collision with hard surfaces. Of course, aesthetics are important too, and you would want to find a helmet that can match your gear and make you a safe rider.

We have done our research, and here are the top kiteboarding helmets that you should consider buying before kiteboarding itself.

1. Bern Unlimited Watts EPS Summer Helmet

kiteboarding helmet

Apart from scoring well in looks, Bern Unlimited Watts EPS Summer Helmet has an efficient and robust structure as well.

With the proprietary dial adjustment system, it is able to providing a good fitting to your head. There are several sizes for you to choose from, so do choose carefully based on the dimensions.

The entire helmet is light in weight, yet at the same time not compromising on the safety of the rider. It meets safety certification CPSC, EN1077B, EN1078, hence providing a guarantee that your head will be protected at all times. And this is made possible by the polycarbonate shell thickness!

  • Strong and durable, adjustable dial fits well to the head
  • Has proper ventilation, hence comfortable to the body
  • Styled well and can be used as gear for multiple sports

Also, with a safety certification of EN 1386, you can be assured that your safety will be taken care of at all times while you are kiteboarding. This leaves you to enjoy the entire experience fully.

The chin straps are completely adjustable. Also, to ensure that there is a good fit, it employs a twist tightening system that ensures that the helmet will always fit your head! It does have an air-vent system, but I suspect that wouldn’t be necessary at all.

Pros

  • Adjustable backstrap with ear cover spec is very popular among kiteboarders
  • The inner foam and the flaps provide a great deal of comfort and security
  • A single size can be adjusted up to two different sizes, hence economical when purchased for training purposes

Cons

  • The earpieces available with the helmet aren’t secure enough, chances of losing them remain high
  • As the strap of the helmet is made of plastic, there are complaints that there are sharp edges
  • The looks might be unconventional for some riders

Extreme sports like kiteboarding come with tricky conditions. While you are enjoying kiteboarding in places like the BaliHood River or in Florida, you should not forget to bring along a nice pair of sunglass. No, the purpose the sunglass isn’t to make you look cool. Rather, the sunglass is needed to protect our eyes, of course, together with other essential items like the kiteboarding harness.

Why The Need To Use Sunglasses During Kiteboarding

During the long exposure to the Sun, our eyes will inevitably be damaged by it. The riders need sunglasses with frame protection, UV ray deflection and a polarized lens for avoiding water surface reflection. The entire structure is supported by a secure strap. As the sport includes more time with the wind rather than the waves, these sunglasses help refrain the eyes from constant wind and burns. The harness happens to be one of the mandatory gear which provides comfort and a great deal of safety. It’s an individual decision to choose it according to the comfort level, yet advisable to go through features for both harnesses and uses. And just so you know, when it comes to selecting harness for kiteboarding, there are two types of harnesses that you can choose from, namely the waist harness and the seat harness.

Let’s talk about some key points for both waist and seat harnesses and the level of kiteboarding they can support.

Seat Harness

Beginners Guide To Choosing Best Kiteboarding HarnessWith a spreader bar and a low tow point, these harnesses tend to give greater stability and easy water launches. Like the name suggests, the seat harness allows the kiteboard to sit on it, hence giving the user much more comfort than the waist harness. It is really the best option if you are heavy, as the force distribution is equally distributed through the legs. With this, users will get to have more comfort than usual.

The seat harness is popular among beginners as it is easy to operate and there is less discomfort than the waist harness. Of course, it might restrict movement a little on the legs, but that itself shouldn’t affect you, especially if you are new to the sport.

Pros

  • The harness arrangement is beneficial for heavy set riders and people with back sensitiveness.
  • The leg straps do not get looped in the harness, hence allows beginners to control the kite easily.
  • Low cost of the product

Cons

  • The design is bulkier as compared to waist harness, hence might be uncomfortable to some riders
  • Kiteboarders, especially large riders experience discomfort in the legs and the movement is restricted due to the bulky nature of the harness

Waist Harness

waist harnessWaist harnesses are the ones preferred mostly by experienced surfers and freestyle riders. Perfect fit on the upper abdomen allows smooth movement of legs and torso, hence attributing to the fact that they are popular with freeride kiteboarders. It is indeed easier to wear the waist harness than the seat harness. However, in terms of slipping, it does have a higher chance of slipping up the rider’s waist. If this occurs, it will cause much discomfort as well as safety issues for the kiteboarder itself.

Pros

  • Easy to wear and take off design
  • Pulls of prolonged swims in self rescue situations
  • Meant for protection of lower rib portions in heavy crashes

Cons

  • Harness can slip up
  • Need experienced kiteboarder to operate this effectively
  • Can cause backpains as there a pull force on the back while riding

So, these were some of the things to consider while choosing your harness. As a suggestion, it is always ideal to choose a harness which fits and sits well on your body. Experienced riders do prefer waist harness as it allows complete leg movement, but seat harness will always remain a safe choice to begin in the sport.

When we have two choices on the platter, both with their own perks, we often tend to wonder if both features could be in one. Now, that wish has been fulfilled in case of a kiteboarding harness.

Of course, with the advancement in technology, there is a new type of harness called the boardshorts harness. The boardshorts harness combines the effectiveness of both the seat and waist harness. So you can imagine comfort as well as full range of mobility. But it may not be that sightly.

For beginners, we will always recommend the seat harness. For experienced kiteboarders who wants to go into freestyle kiteboarding, you might want to choose the waist harness for its mobility. Of course, since we are into freestyling and we do not really care about aesthetics, our natural choice will be the kiteboarding broadshorts harness.
